Anyone else disappointed with this years U.S. Open?
Was it me or were the pros scared to make shots in the U.S. Open? Watching a lot of coverage I saw to much thinking about shots and not enough hitting them. Mental errors were exaggerated on the course and probably for good reason but I think it was more the intimidation factor than the actual setup of the course. I have seen Tiger, Phil, Vijay, and many others make miraculous shots in many tournaments over and over again that they wouldn’t or couldn’t do at Winged Foot this year. Something I found interesting as well was that the bulk majority of members of Winged Foot were scratch golfers…since when does the “hardest test in golf” have that kind of a membership? I know, I know you are all saying what do you know, you have never played the course. I just don’t buy that it was that hard. Since when does the leader go for it on the 72nd hole when a conservative “par” is all that needed to win the U.S. Open? How about the guy tied for the lead going into the 18th getting a double bogey when his drive was perfect to the middle of the fairway? Last time I checked it is a whole lot easier for us duffers to hit the ball when it’s on the fairway so the pro’s should at least hit the green from 170. Lastly, the only reason Oglvie won was that he was the dullest of all the leaders. Slow and steady never really showing any emotion even when he won the tournament. Maybe next year the real “best golfers in the world” will show up.
